Fiddler and singer Lori Watson is a key figure in the ongoing revival of her native Borders traditions, a process she seeks to extend yet further in her New Voices composition, Sanctuary. Initially inspired by places of actual or fabled refuge – be it for runaway lovers, stolen cattle or world-weary spirits – dotted around the region, the music’s themes draw on the local folklore, real-life history and personal associations attached to these places. Watson leads an ensemble centred on four fiddles, with accompaniment including cello and accordion, in a piece that also incorporates alternative tunings, graphic scoring and a strong improvisational element.

Sanctuary Concept
Sanctuary is a new work, which has been inspired by places of refuge in the Scottish Borders and the stories and characters that are connected to them. Some of the themes explored in Sanctuary include uncertainty, the passing of time, loss, prophecy, refuge, strength and celebration.
In what has often been described as a turbulent past, the Borders became known as the Debateable Lands. St Mary’s Loch was also a place of inspiration for James Hogg and a selection of his words feature in the graphic score As Water Wears The Rock. Lucken Hare is inspired by the folklore surrounding the Eildon hills and in particular, the prophecies of Thomas of Ercyldoun and the story of Canobie Dick.
Musically, the piece aims to further develop some of the key characteristics of Borders music such as chording and improvised harmony and to combine them with structured and free improvisation, alternative tunings and graphic scores.
Additionally, the piece allows freedom for performers to express individual musical voices through performer interaction within the framework of the piece and as such dictates a selection of innovative, flexible performers.
